In 2014, two Student Farm students, Nicole Lesnett and Kiko Barr, began delivering Student Farm (SF) produce to the Associated Students of the University of California, Davis (ASUCD) Pantry where it was made available to University of California, Davis (UCD) students and planting the seed for farm-based food access work on the UCD campus.
In 2016, the UC Global Food Initiative (GFI) released a critical UC system-wide study of student food access and security, indicating that 42% of University of California (UC) students experience some measure of food insecurity. The UC Office of the President (UCOP) pledged $3.3 million over two years to improve access to fresh and nutritious food for student populations. The UCD Student Farm was approached by GFI/UCOP to partner in campus food access work.
The Student Farm integrated this directive into its existing programs, resulting in the development of the Community Table Project (CTP). CTP grows, harvests, packs, and donates SF produce to on-campus partners, with the goal of improving UCD student access to fresh produce and dialogue around sustainable food systems. CTP's two efforts, Fresh Focus and Community Connections, together address these dual goals.
